WIP Check · Starting point

# A technical diagnosis of your software before you invest in changes

WIP Check is an analysis of your software and the infrastructure it runs on, done before any major investment. We review architecture, code, infrastructure, backup, security, DNS, and deployment; identify risks, bottlenecks, and waste; and deliver an executive report with a prioritized action plan, written for decision-makers.

## How does the technical diagnosis work?

The diagnosis starts with a conversation to understand your system and what concerns you, continues with an analysis done with read access to the code and infrastructure, and ends with a report and an action plan. Scope and price are set before work starts.

There are four steps:

1. **Initial conversation.** You tell us what the system does, who uses it, where it runs, and what worries you. That defines the scope: which applications, environments, and integrations the analysis covers.
2. **Access.** We agree on read access to the repository, infrastructure, and settings, with the minimum permissions needed. Access can be revoked at the end.
3. **Analysis.** We review architecture, code, infrastructure, backup, security, DNS, and deployment. The analysis follows the seven pillars of the [From Code to Production checklist](https://workinprogress.company/checklist): deployment and environments, security and access, data and backup, monitoring, performance and costs, domain and email, and readiness for search engines and AI agents.
4. **Report.** You receive an executive report, written for decision-makers, and an action plan prioritized by risk and effort. The technical details go in an appendix, for whoever will do the work.

You don’t need to prepare any documentation beforehand. If it exists, it helps; if it doesn’t, the lack of documentation also goes into the report as a risk, with a recommendation on what to document first.

## What kinds of risk does a technical diagnosis look for?

The diagnosis looks for what could take the system down, expose data, or create unnecessary costs, and that doesn’t show up in day-to-day use. These are silent problems: everything seems to work until the day it stops working.

Some examples of what we check:

- **Backup:** does it exist, run on its own, and live outside the main server? Has it ever been restored in a test?
- **Secrets:** are passwords and API keys kept out of the code and the repository history?
- **Access:** who has access to the cloud account, the database, and the domain? Do people who left the team still have it?
- **Deployment:** is releasing a new version a repeatable process with a way back, or does it depend on one person’s memory?
- **Monitoring:** if the system goes down in the middle of the night, does someone find out before your customers do?
- **Domain and email:** does the domain renew automatically, and does company email have SPF, DKIM, and DMARC?
- **Costs:** are there servers, disks, or paid services that nobody uses?
- **Performance:** are there slow queries or bottlenecks that will get worse as you grow?

Each finding is rated by risk and by the effort needed to fix it. That way, the action plan starts with what protects the most for the least work, and you decide what to do first based on information, not guesswork.

## What happens after the diagnosis?

After the diagnosis, you decide what to do with the action plan. The fixes can be made by your team, by another vendor, or by WIP, in a separate project with its own scope and price.

The report is yours, and it is written to be useful even if you don’t hire WIP for anything else. Each recommendation states the problem, the risk of not acting, the suggested path, and an effort estimate.

When WIP does the work, the next step depends on what the diagnosis found:

| What the diagnosis found | Recommended path |
| --- | --- |
| System not live yet, or put online in a makeshift way | [WIP Launch](https://workinprogress.company/services/deploy-to-production) |
| Failures, severe slowness, or instability | [WIP Rescue](https://workinprogress.company/services/software-rescue) |
| Stable system, but slow or expensive | [WIP Optimize](https://workinprogress.company/services/performance-and-costs) |
| Healthy system that needs ongoing oversight | [WIP Care](https://workinprogress.company/services/maintenance-and-monitoring) |

Hiring WIP for the follow-up work is never a condition for anything, and the same independence applies to the diagnosis itself. If the best answer on a given point is “leave it alone for now,” that is what the report will say, along with the reason.

## What does WIP Check deliver?

- Review of the architecture, code, and infrastructure.
- Identification of risks, bottlenecks, and waste.
- Assessment of backup, security, DNS, and deployment.
- Executive report and prioritized action plan.

## Who is WIP Check for?

- Anyone about to invest in major changes who wants to know the risks first.
- Creators who built their software with AI or no-code tools and want to know if it is ready for real users.
- Businesses that depend on a system that nobody on the team fully understands.
- Teams that want an independent second opinion on architecture, infrastructure, and costs.

## What is not included in WIP Check?

- Fixes and implementation: the diagnosis identifies and prioritizes; the work itself is contracted separately, if you want it.
- Penetration testing (pentest) or a formal compliance audit.

## How much does WIP Check cost?

WIP Check starts at US$ 150. Reference price. The final price depends on the size and complexity of the system and is agreed in the proposal before work starts. Infrastructure, licenses, and third-party services are paid for separately.

## Frequently asked questions about WIP Check

### How much does a technical diagnosis of a software system cost?

WIP Check has a reference price starting at US$ 150 per project. The final price depends on the size and complexity of the system and is agreed in the proposal before work starts. Infrastructure, licenses, and third-party services, when needed, are charged separately.

### Do I need to give access to my system for the diagnosis?

Yes. The analysis needs read access to the code, infrastructure, and settings within the scope. Access is agreed on before work starts, with the minimum permissions needed, and can be revoked at the end.

### Does the diagnosis also fix the problems it finds?

No. WIP Check identifies and prioritizes risks, bottlenecks, and waste, and delivers an action plan. The fixes can be made by your team, by another vendor, or by WIP, in a separate project with its own scope and price.

### How long does a technical diagnosis take?

It depends on the size of the system, the number of environments, and how quickly access is granted. The timeline is stated in the proposal, along with the scope of what will be analyzed.

### What is the difference between WIP Check and WIP Rescue?

WIP Check assesses the system and tells you what to do, in order of priority. WIP Rescue comes in when there is already a concrete problem, such as slowness, outages, or runaway costs, and includes investigating the problem and fixing the priority bottlenecks.
