WIP for Business

# The engineering behind your company's technology

For businesses that depend on digital systems, need to modernize their operations, or don't have a full technical team. WIP diagnoses, fixes, modernizes, and operates software and infrastructure, with clear recommendations, predictable costs, and vendor independence: the technology we recommend is the one that solves your problem, not the one that earns us the most.

> Your company takes care of the business. We take care of the engineering behind the technology.

## What problems does WIP solve for businesses?

- The system behind your sales or customer service slows down or crashes at the worst possible moments.
- No one in the company knows for sure how the system works, where the backup is, or who has access.
- Cloud and license bills keep growing, and it's unclear what you're paying for.
- The legacy software still works, but every change is slow, expensive, and risky.
- Different vendors handle different parts, and no one is accountable for the whole.

## How does WIP work with the vendor or team a company already has?

WIP works alongside whoever already takes care of the system, without replacing anyone by default. The people who develop keep developing, and WIP handles infrastructure engineering, reliability, and operations, which don’t always have a clear owner.

A company’s system can involve several vendors: whoever built it, whoever hosts it, whoever manages the domain, whoever sells the licenses. When something fails, each one answers for their own part, and no one answers for the whole.

WIP can take on that role of technical owner for the whole:

- **Map** what exists: systems, contracts, accounts, access, and dependencies.
- **Organize** the path to production, with repeatable deployment and logged changes.
- **Track** the health of the environment, with monitoring, tested backups, and reports.
- **Mediate** technical conversations with vendors, when the scope includes it.

Access is always agreed with the company and the vendors involved, with the minimum permissions needed. Accounts and code stay in the company’s name.

If there’s no team or vendor, WIP takes on the engineering, with the scope and hours set in the contract. For custom software development and updating older systems, there’s [WIP Modernize](https://workinprogress.company/services/software-modernization).

## How do you keep technology costs predictable?

Costs become predictable when each part has its own price, a written scope, and regular follow-up. At WIP, the fee for the work is shown separately from infrastructure, licenses, and third-party services, and each contract says what it includes and what it doesn’t.

In practice, that means:

- **Projects with a scope agreed before work starts.** The reference price of each service is public, and the final price comes in the proposal, once we understand the system.
- **Recurring contracts with clear limits:** environments covered, hours or work capacity, support hours, and exclusions.
- **Infrastructure kept separate:** you see how much you pay the cloud provider and how much you pay WIP, with no mixed costs.
- **Budget alerts** on the infrastructure account, so an increase shows up before the invoice does.
- **Recommendations with costs:** every technical suggestion comes with the estimated cost of doing it and the risk of not doing it.

Vendor independence also helps control costs: the recommendation follows what the system needs, not what earns WIP the most, and it might be a simple virtual private server (VPS), a managed service, or a combination.

When the goal is to reduce a bill that has already grown, [WIP Optimize](https://workinprogress.company/services/performance-and-costs) measures usage and proposes changes with targets.

## Where do you start when no one knows the real state of the system?

Start with a technical diagnosis. [WIP Check](https://workinprogress.company/services/technical-diagnosis) reviews architecture, code, infrastructure, backups, security, DNS, and deployment, and delivers an executive report with a prioritized action plan, before any larger investment.

One possible scenario: the system was built years ago, the people who developed it are no longer available, documentation is scarce, and no one can say where the backup is or who has access to the server. The system works, but the company depends on it without knowing how exposed it is.

The diagnosis answers questions that leadership can use to decide:

- Is the system at serious risk today?
- If the server disappeared, could the data be recovered? How quickly?
- Who has access to what, and who shouldn’t anymore?
- How much is spent on infrastructure, and how much of that is waste?
- What needs to be done first, and how much does it cost?

The report is written for decision-makers, with the technical details in an appendix for whoever will do the work. The fixes can be made by the in-house team, by another vendor, or by WIP, in a separate project.

If the system is already having problems, such as slowness or outages, the most direct path is [WIP Rescue](https://workinprogress.company/services/software-rescue), which already includes the investigation.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does WIP replace the company's IT team?

Not necessarily. WIP handles the software engineering and infrastructure of your systems. If the company already has a development team or vendor, we work alongside them; if not, we take on that part, with the scope and hours set in the contract.

### How does WIP choose which technology to recommend?

Based on the problem, not the vendor. WIP is independent and may recommend a simple virtual private server (VPS), Cloudflare, AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or a hybrid architecture, always with the cost and risks of each option.

### Are infrastructure costs included in WIP's price?

No. Infrastructure, licenses, cloud usage, and third-party services are listed separately from WIP's fees, so you know exactly how much you pay each provider.

### Does the company need technical knowledge to follow the work?

No. Reports and recommendations are written for decision-makers, covering what is being done, what it costs, and what the risks are. The technical details are documented for whoever needs them.
